Laurel Farm Hand Knits

Our beautiful hand-knitted garments are made from the wool of alpacas at Laurel Farm.  The alpacas are shorn annually and the fleece is sent away to a mini mill to be spun into high quality knitting yarn for our expert knitters to create superb hand crafted clothes and accessories.

Alpaca wool / fibre is highly prized and selective breeding by the ancient Incas succeeded in achieving extremely fine fibre products. The aim of modern breeding strategies is to reproduce the  fineness and density of fleeces which are in demand worldwide. 

Alpaca fibre is exceptionally fine, warm and lustrous, with a very soft feel (called the handle). As the number of scales on individual Alpaca wool fibres is considerably lower than that of sheep’s wool, this perhaps explains why people who are allergic to sheep’s wool do not have the same reaction to Alpaca wool.

The fibre is extremely durable, second only in strength to silk and comparable to cashmere for softness.  Alpacas produce fleece in 22 natural shades and colours, and here at Laurel Farm we concentrate on breeding good quality coloured alpacas whose fleece can be used without dye.  As far as possible we keep the colours separated so that our garments reflect the actual colour of the alpacas– such as black, mahogany brown, mid brown, light brown, and white.

Laurel Farm Alpaca wool

alpaca wool from our own Alpacas

Laurel Farm Alpaca wool is spun at a mini-mill from 100% Alpaca wool , to take full advantage  of its excellent properties - strength, silkiness, softness and hypoallergenic qualities.  All colours are the natural colours of the alpacas without dye.   The fawn Aran is a blend of fleece from several different alpacas all with different shades of fawn from light to dark.

Garments made from alpaca wool should be carefully hand washed in luke-warm water and dried flat.   They may be dry cleaned but the chemicals used may spoil the natural softness of the wool.

FLEECE FOR HAND SPINNERS

THIS YEARS FLEECE HAS ALL BEEN SOLD SORRY!

If you prefer to spin your own wool or want to buy a gift for a friend who spins, why not buy fleece direct from us.  We have white, fawn, dark brown and black fleece available at the following prices, which include VAT. Please add  75p per Kilo for carriage.

Grade A  Fleece - all colours - fleece taken from the saddle and in some cases, where the quality is good enough,  the neck   £12. 50 per kilo
Baby Fleece (from alpaca cria)  £14. 00 per kilo
Grade B Fleece - fleece taken from the neck, belly and legs   £5. 00 per kilo
