Alpaca wool is soft and fine with the quality of cashmere and the strength of silk. Alpaca fleeces come in 22 natural colours from white through fawn, light brown, dark brown to black. Although the modern trend has been to use white wool and dye it, here at Laurel Farm, we believe that the rich natural colours of the alpaca look superb when knitted into classic hand knitted garments. The advantage of using undyed wool is that there is no processing and therefore no environmental damage caused in the process of producing the wool. The colours lend themselves to classic designs and of course do not fade as the colour is part of the wool itself. The deep mahogany brown and the deep black will last The main producer of alpaca wool is Peru, where the majority of alpacas are bred. In the UK alpaca farmers either send their fleece to a co-operative or have it spun at a mini mill and either sell it as knitting wool to hand knitters, or have it made into garments for sale off farm or on line. Here at Laurel Farm Alpacas we sell our own Aran Sweaters made from 100% alpaca wool and hand knitted to a very high standard |
